Android adds scam checks for texts and blocks secret call forwarding

16 Oct 2026, 06:02 1 min read

The short version

Google is rolling out new Android protections: an optional stricter scam mode in Google Messages, and a block on secret call forwarding. Scammers use forwarding to capture your one-time passcodes.

What happened

The new Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages is optional and switched off until you turn it on. It uses Google's cloud AI to study conversations with unknown senders, and a smaller AI on your phone to check unfamiliar links before you tap. Google says it is arriving in the coming weeks.

On calls, Android now stops apps from quietly turning on call forwarding. If someone talks you into typing a forwarding code on the dial pad, Android warns you first. Login fields and payment screens in Chrome are also hidden during live screen sharing.

Scam alerts in chat notifications, so far on Pixel phones, will reach more Android makers' phones later this year. Separately, Circle to Search can review a suspicious text for you.

Why it matters to you

Call forwarding lets a scammer redirect your incoming calls to another number. Google says scammers do this to steal one-time passcodes and take over your accounts. Blocking it removes one way in.

The stricter Messages mode will not help unless you switch it on. Google's checks for fake bank calls name Banco do Brasil, Itaú Unibanco and Revolut, among others, so do not assume your own bank is covered.

What to do

Keep your system and apps up to date, then look for Enhanced protection in Google Messages once it reaches your phone, and consider turning it on.

Never type a code into your dial pad because a caller asks. If a message or call asks for account details, hang up and contact your bank on its official number. You can also circle a doubtful text with Circle to Search to check it.
