OneDrive is ending support for older iPhones: what to do now
The short version
Microsoft plans to drop OneDrive support for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 soon. The iPhone XR, XS, XS Max and seventh-generation iPad cannot run the newer software, so their OneDrive app will stop being updated.
What happened
Microsoft has added a notice to the OneDrive page in the App Store saying support for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will end "soon". It advises people to move to iOS 26 or 27 to keep getting the latest version. No exact date has been given.
The iPhone XR, XS and XS Max cannot be updated to iOS 26. The seventh-generation iPad is in the same position. Version 18.12.1 is the last one that works with iOS 18, according to notes on Microsoft's test version of the app.
Existing copies of the app are not expected to stop working straight away.
Why it matters to you
If you use OneDrive on one of these devices, the app will stop getting new features and fixes once Microsoft makes the change.
It is not yet clear what happens to access once support ends. heise reports there are no direct alternative apps, so affected users who want the latest version must replace the device or choose another storage service, such as iCloud.
What to do
Check whether your device is one of those named. If it is, plan to replace it or move your files.
In the meantime, make sure your photos and documents are copied somewhere you can reach from another device, such as a computer or a newer phone.
