Windows 11 can now reinstall itself over the internet: what to know
The short version
Microsoft has added Cloud rebuild to Windows 11. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows and the PC's drivers, so a PC that won't start can be fixed without a USB stick. It erases everything on the PC.
What happened
Cloud rebuild arrives with Microsoft's October 2026 optional update for Windows 11. It is being released gradually, so not every PC will show it yet. It can be installed through Windows Update or downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
It works because it does not use the Windows files already on the PC. If Windows fails to start several times, the PC opens a recovery screen by itself, where you choose Troubleshoot and look for Cloud rebuild. On a working PC, go to Settings, System, Recovery, then Rebuild PC.
You can choose to remove files, or remove and sanitise them, which makes them much harder to recover. Sanitising takes longer and cannot be undone.
Why it matters to you
For some people, Cloud rebuild could remove the need to prepare a recovery USB stick in advance. It is another option to try for a PC that won't start, provided the PC has internet access and power.
Unlike Reset this PC, it never keeps your files. Anything not saved in OneDrive or another backup is lost. The sanitise option also helps when you recycle, return or give away a PC, though how well it works depends on the PC's storage hardware.
What to do
Back up important files now, to OneDrive or another place, so a rebuild does not cost you anything. Install the October 2026 update or later when it is offered.
If a PC fails, try lighter recovery options first. If you use Cloud rebuild, plug the PC in, connect to the internet and do not switch it off partway through.
