WhatsApp groups get permanent pins and Group Status: what to know
The short version
WhatsApp has announced four group chat features: permanent pinned messages, Group Status, sharing chat history after someone joins, and a filter for mentions and replies. They are arriving gradually on Android and iPhone.
What happened
The features were announced on WhatsApp's official blog on 29 October. Pinned messages could previously be kept for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Now there is an option with no expiry, and you can still unpin a message whenever you like.
Group Status lets members share photos, videos and updates with one group instead of all their contacts. Members can view, react to and add their own, and the posts vanish after 24 hours.
History sharing used to work only when adding someone. Now you can tap a new member's name after they join and share recent messages with them. Those messages stay end-to-end encrypted. The new filter lists unread group chats where you were mentioned, replied to, or tagged with @all.
Why it matters to you
For clubs, teams and small businesses, a permanent pin keeps rules, event details or announcements at the top without anyone needing to re-pin them. Late joiners can be brought up to speed in a tap.
Group Status gives a way to share updates with a chosen audience only. The filter helps busy people spot messages meant for them across many groups.
What to do
Update WhatsApp from your app store. The rollout is staged, so the features may take days or weeks to reach your account.
If you run a group, pin the one message members most need. Before sharing history with a new member, check it holds nothing private.
