WordPress or a custom website: which suits my business?
The short answer: WordPress suits a business that wants to manage a simple site itself and is willing to keep it updated. A custom-built website suits a business that wants a site designed around it and looked after by the people who built it. Neither is always better, so the right choice depends on who will do the upkeep and how much your site needs to do.
What the two options actually are
WordPress is ready-made website software. It is open source, which means anyone may use it without paying for the software itself. It has been around since 2003, and W3Techs reports that it runs about 40% of all websites. Its own makers say that people with little technical experience can use it straight away, while more technical people can change it extensively.
A custom-built website is designed and built around your business instead of starting from a template. The result is a site made for your brand, your customers and the way you work, without a stack of add-ons you never asked for.
Both can produce a good website. The difference lies in what you carry afterwards: the upkeep, the risks and the ownership.
Is WordPress really free?
The software is free. A working website is not. You still need:
- a domain name, your business address on the internet
- hosting, the computer that keeps your site online
- a design, usually a ready-made theme
- extra features, usually added as plugins, which are small add-on programs
- someone to install updates and fix things when they break
We will not guess at what themes and plugins cost, because it varies, so ask any provider to list them in writing.
For comparison, here is what we charge for the pieces we offer. A .com.na or .com domain starts from N$500 per year. Our hosting starts from N$1,500 a year and includes SSL security, Cloudflare protection, uptime monitoring, security updates and regular backups. A custom business website of about five to eight pages starts from N$15,000 and typically falls between N$15,000 and N$35,000. An online shop or booking website starts from N$35,000. All our prices exclude 15% VAT.
So the honest comparison is not free against N$15,000. It is the total cost of keeping each kind of site healthy over several years, including your own time.
Security and updates
This is where the two options differ most in daily life.
The official WordPress guidance says the software is updated regularly to fix newly found security problems, and that older versions do not receive security updates. It also says that when a fix is released, the information needed to exploit the weakness is almost certainly public, which makes old versions more open to attack. In plain words: a WordPress site needs updating on a schedule, for as long as it exists.
The same guidance explains that a host looks after the server, while the website owner is responsible for the application running on it. It also advises getting plugins and themes only from trusted sources. Every plugin is another piece of software that needs keeping current.
That is not a flaw unique to WordPress. Any website needs care. But a WordPress site that is never updated becomes a real risk.
Our view is that old sites built on page builders and many plugins tend to get slower, heavier and less secure with each update. Patching them means paying to maintain the problem. That is why we prefer to build on a modern foundation and, where an old site has reached that point, rebuild it properly while keeping your brand, content and domain as your customers know them.
A custom site still needs looking after. Our maintenance plans start at N$600 a month for software updates, a monthly health check and a short report. They are optional but recommended. Hosting with us covers the server side either way.
Speed matters more in Namibia than you might think
Most people here visit websites on their phones, often on mobile data. A slow site loses visitors before they see what you offer.
Our view is that a site loaded with a heavy theme and many plugins tends to run slower. A custom build lets us keep only what your site needs. We also host on servers we manage in Johannesburg, which is close to Namibia, and deliver sites through Cloudflare to speed them up further. Whichever option you choose, ask to see the site loading on a phone over mobile data before you pay.
On Google, our websites include basic SEO setup (Google Search Console, a sitemap and page titles), and our discoverability work covers the rest.
Editing your own site
Here WordPress has a real advantage. Its makers say people with limited technical experience can use it out of the box.
With a custom build, you edit what we agree you need to edit. Where your content changes often, such as products, vehicles, news or bookings, we build an admin area so your team can update it yourselves. This is agreed when we quote. Other changes are handled by us: included in a maintenance plan, or charged at N$650 per hour (minimum 30 minutes) if you do not have one.
If you want to rewrite your own pages every week and never involve a developer, that is a genuine reason to lean towards WordPress.
Who owns your website, and can you leave?
Ask this before signing anything, whichever route you take. With us, your domain is registered in your business's name and your text, images and data belong to you. Once a website or custom system is paid in full, the code is yours too, and we will hand it over if you ever want to move.
WordPress itself is portable, since the software is open and anyone can run it. But your site's ownership still depends on your agreement with whoever built and hosts it. Check who holds the domain, the hosting account and the admin logins. If your developer disappeared tomorrow, could you still get in?
Online shops
If you sell online, you also need a way to take payments. We integrate DPO Pay, a payment gateway licensed to operate in Namibia. Customers pay on DPO's secure page, so card details are never stored on your site. Your business applies to DPO directly, and your site needs clear terms on delivery, returns, refunds and privacy, which we set up for you. You can see a finished example in our florist shop case study.
When each option makes sense
WordPress is likely the right choice if:
- you want a simple site and are happy to do the updates and editing yourself
- you have someone dependable who will look after it every month
- your budget is very tight and your needs are modest
A custom build is likely the right choice if:
- you want a site designed around your brand and the way your customers behave
- you would rather not think about updates, backups and security
- you want one team that knows your site and answers when you call
- you need something that goes beyond pages, such as stock management, bookings or a client portal
That last point matters. When a business needs software that does real work, a website alone stops being enough, and a custom business system may be the better route. Custom systems start from N$60,000, quoted per project. If you do not need one, we will say so.
If you are unsure, our digital experiences work explains how we approach websites and online stores. A focused business website typically takes about two to four weeks, and you receive a written quote and scope before any work begins.
Frequently asked questions
Can a WordPress site be rebuilt as a custom one later?
Yes. We can rebuild an existing site on a modern foundation while keeping your brand, content and domain as your customers know them. Tell us what you have now and we will say whether a rebuild is worth it.
What happens if I stop updating WordPress?
The official guidance says older versions no longer receive security updates, and that the information needed to exploit a fixed weakness is almost certainly public, so old versions are more open to attack. A site that is not updated becomes riskier over time.
Do I still need hosting with a custom website?
Yes, every website needs hosting. Ours starts from N$1,500 a year and includes SSL, Cloudflare protection, monitoring, security updates and backups. Domains are separate, from N$500 a year for .com.na and .com.
Which domain should a Namibian business choose?
Most Namibian businesses use a .com.na domain, which costs far less than the short .na option. A .com is a good choice if you have international customers. We register it in your business's name either way.
Will a custom website cost more than WordPress?
WordPress software is free, but a working site still needs a domain, hosting and upkeep. Our custom business websites start from N$15,000. Compare the full cost over several years, including hosting, updates and your own time, before deciding.
